How Hormones Affect your Weight.

SOME SHOCKING FACTS!

Australia is the fattest nation in the world, with more than 9 million adults classified as obese or overweight, 25% of our children as classified as overweight or obese.  Our supermarkets stock thousands of items, yet many of us are malnourished.  Our children are the first generation who is not expected to outlive their parents.  Children are developing chronic lifestyle diseases like diabetes type 2 and cardio-vascular disease in their teens.  In most Western countries, diet-related chronic diseases represent the single largest cause of ill-health and death.

Does all this sound shocking?  Yes it is and it is all TRUE?

WHY???

So why is it so hard to burn excess body fat?  It is due to how our hormones react.  Most people know that losing weight and maintaining that weight loss is not just about eating less and exercising more.  This might work for a short time, but you start to plateau and the weight just goes back on.  If you want to lose fat and keep it off it is important to understand how some of our key hormones work.

STRESS HORMONES

The adrenal glands release different hormones, two of which are adrenalin and cortisol.  Most people have experienced the adrenalin rush when they are frightened or doing something thrilling.  The body can only release adrenalin for a short amount of time and then it will start to release cortisol.  Cortisol will be released whenever the body is under threat (real or perceived), cortisol is a fat storing hormone.  So the more stressed you are the harder it is to burn fat.

PANCREATIC HORMONES

The pancreas releases insulin in response the glucose being detected in the blood.  Insulin acts likes a gate keeper to allow glucose into the cells for use as energy. If high levels of glucose are continually found in the blood the insulin stops allowing glucose into the cells, because there are no more ‘gates’ to be opened.  This excess glucose will be converted to fat and stored around your abdomen.  This is unhealthy fat! This fat causes chronic diseases.

OTHER HORMONES

There are other hormones which can also affect your ability to burn fat, these include:

-          Thyroid hormones – TSH , T3, T4, rT3

-          Reproductive hormones – oestrogen and testosterone

So it is important to ensure these hormones are working properly and are in balance.

10 STEPS TO INCREASE FAT BURNING

Climbing the Rocks of Understanding

LifeStyle Practitioner Academy at Minyon FallsOn a recent week end away with my coaching group we were all taken out of the conference room to the beautiful Minyon Falls in the hinterland of Byron Bay.  There is often a reason for our coach taking out on these excursions and not just to get us outside for the day, the question was what were we in for today?

It was a cool and overcast day as we arrived at the start of our walk, everyone was chatting away and ready to go.  Well it was just going to be a walk wasn’t it?  First task, “get yourselves into groups of 3 and stay with that group for the entire walk, there and back”.  A simple task you would think, but it seemed to cause a bit of a problem.  I wanted to walk with one person so I could have a chat, someone else wanted to walk with me.  I didn’t want to say no I am already with someone else, so I just let it go but we were in a group of 5 not 3 – that would be okay wouldn’t  it?  “No, it isn’t okay I said a group of 3, it’s not that hard”.  Okay a group of 3 it was, all sorted we are ready to walk.

Just before we left we had a quick group talk.  Our coach explained that the locals believed that these falls held great positive energy, for some people this walk may be a life changing experience.  In mind head, I was going okay it will be a nice walk but what life change experience could happen to me?

As we were walking off someone called ‘there will be lots of leeches and it will be very slippery, so be careful”.  Hang on there, leeches?  The last time I got a leech I was 15 years old and I screamed the place down and ran around trying to get it off me.  I gulped, and just kept walking.  OK if I was brave I could pretend that leeches didn’t really worry me.

I was in the first group down, taking it carefully but having a bit of a chat on the walk.  Because we were walking down a hill and it was a bit slippery I was a bit cautious, a little worried about what was happening. Then someone found a leech.  “Okay these leeches were real, but they looked small and skinny”. Then I looked down there was a leech on my leg, I didn’t panic I just bent down and flicked it off.  No, worries that was easy and no screams. I didn’t embarrass myself.  Then there was another leech, they were everywhere, I got rid of one and there was another one but I just kept going.  I was still talking to others, a bit of bravado, but I was worried but these leeches.  It was distracting me, I wanted to stop and get out of here.

We were the first to the bottom of the walk.  So where to know, which way did we go?  We hesitated and then started to climb over a small creek and look up at some fairly large rocks – I couldn’t climb them, they were too big, my knee wasn’t strong enough, they were slippery, what if I fell? Lots of excuses but luckily everyone else arrived and it was time for a 30 minute break.  “Great, I wouldn’t have to climb those rocks!”

While we are having some morning tea, I saw a large yabbie which was bright blue and yellow, he was hiding behind a rock. I watched some leeches dancing on a rock trying to find someone’s blood.  I stood (I wasn’t sitting on a wet rock) beside a small creek and just enjoyed the nature.  Was this what our coach had been talking about?  Yeah, it was nice and a life changing experience – I don’t think so” My coach asked me if I wanted to climb up through the rocks to see the waterfall, “Up those rocks, I don’t think so and I happy to stay here on solid ground”¸ He said okay and walked away.

As I stood down by the creek, I started to think.  “How do my clients feel when I ask them to undertake some of my programs?  I know they work.  I know that they will feel better if they do everything that I tell them, but these people don’t really know me but I expect them to trust me.  Just do as I say, you will feel better and you will see I am right.”

“If I expect my clients to trust me and to take this unknown journey then surely I could climb those rocks into the unknown and put my trust in myself and nature to look after me.” I climbed some very slippery large rocks, I needed to find my strength, I needed to find the courage within me to take this challenge, to do something which I have never done before.  After climbing like a mountain goat I walked over a ridge and felt the spray of the waterfall.

The falls were beautiful and the setting was so peaceful.  I sat down on a rock, I didn’t care if it was wet this time, and I just soaked up the atmosphere.  I felt good I had taken a challenge and had got the reward.  “Okay, so this is how my clients feel when they listen to me and trust me and they achieve their goals.  So all I had to do was help them through the hurdles”.

I was feeling good, but….. now I had to climb back down those rocks.  This was going to be harder than climbing up, a lot more risk and uncertainty.  I was a bit slower and very cautious but I know that when I climbed up these rocks I felt great so I wasn’t as worried this time.  I was more confident.  Then it was time for our walk back out of the falls.  Back to our group of 3, I was ready to go.  I was feeling energetic and wanted to start walking but my group wasn’t ready to move.  I had to wait for them; we ended up being the last group to leave.  I didn’t need to watch my step on the way back up, I was full of energy and I was confident.  I moved forward, I left my group as they were having problems keeping up with me but the instruction was to stay together so I stopped and waited for them.  “Come on, didn’t they feel the same energy I did?” It seemed to be a quicker trip out of the falls. I didn’t get any leeches this time, even though I was prepared for them.  I had a couple of small slips, but I corrected and kept moving up.  Suddenly we were back at the carpark, we were finished.

I took a couple of minutes to think about this walk.  I realised that many of the feelings and emotions that I had experienced on this walk were similar feelings that my clients feel when they undertake a treatment program.  They want to do it, they are excited but cautious, and they start enthusiastically but then start the stumble as the “leeches” slow them down.  They get worried as they change their habits, then they reach a goal.  They feel good, but comfortable.  Then another challenge comes along. A decision which means they will fall back to old habits or move forward with the challenge.  Those who take the challenge feel great and enthusiastic.  Those who don’t take the challenge find that they stagnate and things just stay the same.

I did learn something on this walk, it wasn’t the lightning bolt of energy.  I did connect with some of the feelings that my clients go through.  Does that mean I should stop what I am doing?  No, it means that I need to encourage my clients. I need to be firm and keep my intent clear.  My clients deserve to feel the best they can and it is my role to guide them through the rocks to the beautiful place on the other side. Not everyone wants to climb the rocks, they are happy to stay where they are comfortable and that’s okay.” Thanks Adam for the experience and the lessons.

Kicking Goals with Mickey Mouse

Just over 12 months ago I stood up in front of a group of colleagues who I didn’t know very well and told them that my biggest goal for the following 12 months wasn’t to have to biggest and best natural health clinic but it was to be able to find the time and funds to take my children to Disneyland.

At that time it seemed almost impossible to be able to achieve a goal like this.  I wasn’t earning a wage, I had no staff that would be able to look after clients while I was away and I still had fairly high monthly expenses to cover.  But it was out there, I had stated my goals.  Now it was up to me and the Universe to make it happen.  Ever since that day when I stated my goal in public I didn’t doubt that I would be taking this trip.

I had spoken to my children about “going to Disneyland one day” but it was always something which was going to happen in the future.  On the day that I spoke of my goal, it came from my heart it was something that I needed to do for my children and for myself.  It was a very emotional time for me and on the day six months later when I stood up in front of the same group of people and told them that I had booked and paid for my trip this was even more emotional.

I have been told in the past that a true goal is one that makes you cry or affects you emotionally.  It is that emotion which will help you realise your goals.

I am not telling you this story just to make you jealous that I am leaving cold Sydney for California (well just a little bit) but to share with you how we can all achieve our goals if we have a true reason and we are positive about it every day.  Whether your goal is to lose weight, run a marathon, make more money, whatever it is.  If your goal comes from your heart and you really believe that you can achieve it, it will happen.  One of the best ways to help this happen is Vision Boards or Goal Books.

I created a Vision Board with my children about going to Disneyland.  Our board had photos of Disneyland, a Disney Princess and Mickey Mouse.  My children also drew pictures of themselves amongst these photos.  This Vision Board hung above my desk at home so that I could see it every day.  Actually it is still hanging there.  Vision Boards work and if you have a true goal, one which comes from your heart then creating a Vision Board is the first step to achieving your goal.

Visions Boards need to express your emotions and feelings, it should be done in the present.  Select a date in the future (6 months is good) and use words/pictures/photos which describe what you will be doing and feeling on your selected date.  It might be a dress you will be wearing, it might be an event you will be attending, or it might be about how much money you are earning, it is whatever your goal is.  Put your Vision Board somewhere that you will see it daily.

You can do the same with a Goal Book but you must look at it on a regular basis.  In your Goal Book write exactly how you feel once you have achieved your goal, really explore the emotions, your reactions, what you can do for others when you achieve your goals and how that makes you feel.  Include photos/words/pictures in your Goal Book as well.

So if you have a heart goal, spend this weekend creating your Vision Board.  Don’t put it off, the longer it takes you to create your Vision Board or write in your Goals Book the longer it will take you to achieve your goals.

I will say hello to Mickey Mouse for you all.

I found more than Monkeys at Dubbo….

Well another lot of school holidays are over but for once these seem to go by very quickly.  Having the long week end at the end of the holidays was a good break because I was able to share the parenting duties with Dad.

We took our kids up to Dubbo for a couple of days to have a look around the Zoo plus we checked out the Space Observatory and the Wellington Caves.  When it was time to leave my son said that “Dubbo was Cool, can we live here?”

Looking back at our weekend a few things came up for me.  It was great just cycling around the zoo in the fresh air with no real timetable or plan, we just took whatever path there was and we still managed to see most things and if we missed something it didn’t really matter.  Sometimes I think we need to step off the “path of life” and just go with whatever happens.  We are busy making plans (and these are important) to make sure that we see and do everything that we forget to have FUN and just relax.

The other thing which really made me think was at the Observatory where I looked through a telescope and saw Saturn.  It was so clear with its rings, it looked just like a photo.  Yes, I have seen pictures of Saturn before but seeing it with my own eyes made it real, there is something out there, outside of our own small Easrth.  This is a bit like our dreams and wishes for the future, we can see them in our mind’s eye but they aren’t real.  Writing about them in detail, finding the pictures to go with the words or creating a Vision Board makes them real – and achievable.

Also standing in a cave in Wellington, a cave which was once part of the sea.  Over time the earth changed and moved, it created something new.  Some parts of the earth collapsed and created caves, the water continued to seep through the earth to create the fantastic formations that we were standing in front of, taking photos.  These caves were millions of years old but they are still being formed and continue to change, one drop at a time.  Isn’t that a bit like us, well we aren’t a million years old, but we have the ability to change and we continue to grow every single day.  Changes in the earth can happen slowly but sometimes it will happen very quickly as a reaction to something, this was seen recently in North Queensland, Christchurch and in Japan.  But as with the earth with every change we make, with every new drop we continue to grow and develop.

So my short trip to Dubbo has given me more than I expected.  It has allowed me to have FUN and experience nature at it’s best.  I am even contemplating a Bike Riding holiday (much to my husband’s delight, he is an avid bike rider), this is something I wouldn’t even have considered in the past but people can change, very slowly……

This trip has also helped me to get back on track about the future direction of my business and the role that the clinic can play in provide support and understanding for Mothers.  My goals book will be filled this weekend with what the clinic will look like in 6 months time and how our team will be able to deliver a fantastic health concept to our clients.  My goals are not just for the clinic, my goals book will also include some of my personal goals.  The changes that I will make so that I can have more fun, spend more time with my family and also time to look after myself.

But no we are not moving to Dubbo, my son will get over that just like he got over not moving to New Zealand last year.

Welcome to my first blog

I have been trying to think of what topic I would handle first, I was considering tackling the level of sugar in our children’s diet or how important it is for Mum’s to look after their children’s mother and other such topics.  I will cover these in the future but for my first topic I thought I would start with something fairly low key – the vaccination debate!  Okay not that low key but a very emotional topic.  I am not going to give my opinion about whether vaccinations are right or wrong; anyone who knows me will know that this opinion is which I very rarely voice.  What I would like to write about is Respect.  Respecting every parent’s right to make a decision that they feel is right for their family.

In Australia we do not have compulsory vaccination, every parent has the right to investigate the pros and cons of the issue and make an informed choice.  There are many reasons why parents choose not to vaccinate – some children are allergic to some of the ingredients in the vaccines, for some it is against their religion, for others they have had serious side effects in the past and for others it is because they have investigated the facts and have decided that this isn’t something they want for their child(ren).  There are just as many reasons why parents decide to vaccinate.  My hope is that before any parent makes a decision that they actually do the research, look at the pros and cons before making a decision, they don’t just vaccinate because their doctor, family or someone else has told them to.

Theoretically if we have two groups of children, one vaccinated and the other not vaccinated.  Then the vaccinated children should be protected from contracting certain diseases.  The unvaccinated children will not have the same protection but their parents have made an informed decision not to vaccinate so they are prepared to deal with the disease when it comes along and treat it according to their own treatment principles. But real life doesn’t work like that.  More and more vaccinated children are contracting these diseases, so who is to blame?  Is it the parents who have decided not to vaccinate, is it the pharmaceutical company that hasn’t made a vaccine that works properly, is it a virus that continually mutates due to the conditions that our current lifestyle provides?   Many questions but often the answer is to simply blame the parent who didn’t vaccinate. “If every child was vaccinated and then this wouldn’t happen.”  Is this statement really true?

I have clients who had “normal” children prior to vaccination who now have children who will have autism for the rest of their life.  There are parents in WA whose children were part of a government lead vaccination program which had such severe adverse effects the vaccine was withdrawn from use for children under 5 years old.  I also have clients who have had children who have got sick from some of these diseases.  It is about risks and benefits, what risks you are prepared to accept for your child as compared to the benefits.

I am not going to tell you whether it is right or wrong to vaccinate your child(ren), I have some clients who vaccinate and others who don’t and I give them both the same level of support when their children are sick and I never question their decision.  Any client who asks me about vaccination will be provided with sources of information from both sides of the argument and the type of support their child will require whether they are vaccinated or not.  I will say though, it is important that we each respect another parent’s right to choose what is right for their family, they are not making a decision because it might affect your child, they make a decision that affects their family only.  So before you blame someone else for not vaccinating their child when your child get sick remember

-          Vaccinations do not give a 100% guarantee that your child won’t get sick

-          Your child can contract a disease from a vaccinated or unvaccinated child

-          Most importantly we all have freedom of choice to make the correct decision for our own family and everyone should respect this.

As I said, a nice easy topic for my first blog.  Please feel free to make comments but do remember to Respect each other’s opinion, even if it is not your own.  I promise the next topic will be a little less divisive.

Yours in good health
